Eavestrough Cleaning in Waterloo

On a Waterloo big-lot house the eavestrough is long, high and a long way from flat ground, and a proper clean is slow, careful ladder work with hands in the trough rather than a blower pointed at the roof.

The job is sized by the house. A 1970s Lakeshore ranch can carry sixty metres of trough and six downspouts under two mature maples, with planting beds and a sloped lawn under every eave; the clean is a half day. A Laurelwood two-storey with a sapling on the boulevard carries a cup of grit per run and is done in an hour. Both are priced for what they are.

What the visit involves

  • A walk round first. Overflow streaks down the face of the trough, a dark line on the brick under a downspout, mulch washed out of a bed at one corner, a sag visible against the fascia line. These say where the water has been going and which downspouts to suspect.
  • Hand clearing. Leaves, keys, shingle grit and the black compost under them are scooped into a bucket on the ladder. Nothing is blown onto the lawn, the pool cover or the car.
  • Roof edge and valleys. Reached from the ladder or with a pole and pulled down, since it is the next load into the trough. Steep roofs are not walked.
  • Flush and test. The trough is rinsed toward each outlet and every downspout is flushed from the top until the bottom runs clear. A downspout that will not take water is dealt with on the spot; see the downspout page.
  • Discharge check. Each outlet is checked for an extension or splash block that points away from the house and not onto the neighbour's lot, a sidewalk or the road, which is what the City's property standards by-law expects of roof drainage.
  • Photos. Before and after of each run, and anything found that needs a decision, sent the same day to you or, for a rental, to the owner.

The big-lot streets

Beechwood, Lakeshore and the Westmount streets have the longest troughs and the most tree over them, and the ladder work is the slow part: the ground under the eaves is landscaped, sloped or occupied by a deck, an air conditioner or a window well, and every ladder set is a stand-off on a leveller. Side-splits and back-splits in Lincoln Village and Lakeshore funnel two roofs' worth of water into one lower downspout, which is the one that blocks and the one that gets the most attention.

The rental houses

In Northdale and the streets off Columbia and University Avenue the clean is often ordered by an owner who is not there. The crew needs the outside tap and the yard, the tenants get a courtesy notice, and the photo set is the owner's record that the gutters were done, which matters when a basement unit later reports damp.

When

Treed streets: the second half of November, after the leaves and Waterloo's optional leaf collection have passed and before the freeze, with a spring clean in late May or June for the keys. Light streets: any time from September to freeze-up. Booking in October for a late-November slot is how to get one.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be there?

No. The crew needs an outside tap and open gates. Photos and the invoice follow, and you choose whether the bagged debris stays at the curb for your next yard waste day or leaves with the crew.

Can you clean under guards that are already on?

Usually. Clip-on and slide-under guards lift so the trough can be checked and the guard brushed off. Glued or riveted foam and brush inserts sometimes cannot come off without damage, and you are told what can be done before anything is touched.

Will anyone walk on my roof?

Not where it can be avoided, and on steep roofs it is avoided entirely. Work is done from stand-off ladders. Where a low-slope roof is the only sensible access, the crew works to Ontario's fall-protection rules, which is part of why this is a job to hire out.
