Downspout Unblocking in Waterloo

The downspout is the part of the system that actually carries water away from the house, and it is the part most cleans skip. In Waterloo it is also where a gutter problem turns into a property standards complaint, because where it discharges is regulated.

Downspouts block at the elbows: the top one, where the outlet turns toward the wall, and the bottom one, where it turns out across the lawn. Maple keys are the main culprit on the big-lot streets; they wedge, mat together and collect a season of grit on top until a hose from the ground will not shift them. On a split-level the lower downspout that takes two roofs' water plugs first and floods the most.

How a downspout is cleared

  • Flush from the top. Hose in at the trough outlet, running. Clear water out the bottom within seconds is a pass.
  • Rod from the bottom. A drain rod or auger up through the bottom elbow breaks most plugs so they wash out.
  • Open the elbow. For a dense plug the elbow comes off at its screws, the mat is pulled out by hand, and the elbow goes back with the screws set so they do not catch the next load. Rusted straps found along the way are replaced.
  • Retest. Every downspout on the house, until each runs clear. A gurgle is a fail.

Underground runs

Many Waterloo houses from the 1960s through the 1980s have downspouts that drop into a pipe at grade, which may lead to a soakaway, the storm sewer, the weeping tile, or nowhere, because it collapsed or silted long ago. Each is tested by running the hose and watching for backup. If it backs up you are told, and the practical fix is normally to disconnect above grade and run the downspout out to grass with an extension rather than to dig. What the pipe connects to is a question for the City's engineering staff; this site does not guess.

Where the water lands, and why it is regulated here

The City of Waterloo's property standards by-law covers directing roof drainage away from neighbouring properties, sidewalks and roadways, keeping grading so water moves away from buildings, and avoiding excessive ponding. A downspout aimed at the fence line on a Beechwood lot, or pouring onto the public sidewalk from a Northdale rental, is therefore not just bad practice but something a neighbour can complain about to Municipal Enforcement. Each outlet is checked for an extension or splash block that is still attached after the winter, points onto your own grass or garden, and has not washed the ground beneath it into a hollow that sends water back to the foundation. On landlord plans this check is photographed every visit for exactly that reason.

Rain barrels and soakaway pits

If you are pursuing the City's stormwater credit, a barrel must connect securely to the downspout and overflow to grass, and a soakaway or infiltration pit must take the downspout routed straight in and sit at least five metres from the house. The crew fits barrel diverters and will route a downspout to a pit you have had built; the City's own guidance recommends guards on troughs feeding a pit so it does not silt. The application and the approval are the City's.

Frozen downspouts

A downspout left part-blocked in November becomes a column of ice and can split at the seam. Leave a frozen one alone; it cannot be cleared safely until it thaws, and the split, if there is one, is a small repair in spring.

Frequently asked questions

Why does one corner overflow and the rest do not?

Because the downspout at that corner is plugged at an elbow, nearly every time. The other cause is a trough that has sagged so water pools away from the outlet. Both show up on the flush test and both are fixable on the visit.

My neighbour says my downspout floods their side yard. What do I do?

Redirect it. An extension or a splash block that sends the water onto your own lawn, two or three metres from both foundations, is usually all it takes, and it is done as part of the visit. The City's property standards by-law expects roof drainage kept off neighbouring property, so it is worth settling before anyone calls Municipal Enforcement.

Should the extensions come off for winter?

Only if they are in the way of snow clearing, and then back on before the March thaw. An extension frozen solid is still better than water pouring at the foundation during a melt.
